Highlanders cruise past Huntsville

After a trio of tough 14-5A games, The Woodlands High School varsity football team had its way in a 35-7 victory over Huntsville at Buddy Moor-head Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

"We came close to playing a complete game tonight, on offense, defense and special teams" said TWHS head coach Mark Schmid. "I'm proud of the way the defense stepped up and played."

The Highlanders' Cameron Montgomery, who was questionable all week because of an injury suffered last week, got cleared to play Friday and did just that, finishing the contest with 140 yards on 14 carries and four touchdowns, including runs of 20, nine, 63 and six yards.

The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first quarter, before QB Greg Meinzer lofted a ball near the goal line that Kyle Drabek leaned all the way back for before hauling it in and slipping just into the front corner of the end zone with some fancy footwork.

That was later followed by scoring runs of 20 and 11 yards by Montgomery in the second quarter for the 21-0 halftime edge.

Meanwhile, the Highlander defense, led by A.J. Montalvo, Craig Hendrix, Jon Merrick and others, was limiting the Hornets to 10 yards until their final drive of the opening half. At the break, HHS had just 42 yards, one passing, and four first downs.

Preston Benditz got the second half started right for TWHS with an interception on the first play. Midway through the quarter, Montgomery took a hand-off on the first play of a drive and dashed up the middle 63 yards to paydirt.

The Highlanders face off against rival Conroe next Friday night.
